Jack (Kid) Berg

Categories: Sport / Games

Countries: USA

Boxer. Born Judah Bergman above a fish shop in Christian Street, according to St George's website. (Even if the fish shop was at the junction with Cable Street that would put the plaque on the wrong side of Cable Street.) One of many young Jewish men who took up boxing as a means of escaping the poverty of the east end of London.

Fought his first bout when he was in his early teens. He first boxed in the USA in 1928, and became World Junior Welterweight Champion in 1930, and British lightweight champion in 1934. Although the plaques give his soubriquet as 'The Whitechapel Windmill' (which was also the title of his autobiography), other sources call him 'The Whitechapel Whirlwind'.  Died London.
