Andrew Behan has researched Atkinson and provides:

Joseph Beavington Atkinson was born on 22 May 1822 in Higher Ardwick, Manchester, Lancashire, the eldest son of Joseph and Sarah Atkinson, née Waring, who were a Quaker family. His father was a silk and cotton manufacturer. The 1851 census shows him living in Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire.

On 10 October 1865 he married Agnes Downing Tripp in Millbrook, Hampshire and the 1871 census shows them living at 13 Carlyle Terrace, Kensington and he listed his occupation as 'Private Property'. The 1881 census records them residing at Stratford House, 113 Abingdon Road, Kensington and he gave his occupation as 'Living on Private Family Property, but an Assistant Teacher of Science and Literature'. He was an author of several books on artists and painters. Probate records show that he lived at both 'Rose Hill', Cotham Park, Bristol, Gloucestershire and Stratford House, Kensington. He died at the latter address on 24 October 1886. His estate totalled £1,510-8s-0d.
