Institution of Incorporated Engineers

Categories: Engineering

The Wikipedia page for this organisation looks like a dumping ground for all the unwanted Is and Es from a Scrabble board.

Began in 1884 as the Vulcanic* Society, formed by a group of apprentices from the works of Maudslay, Sons & Field Ltd, in Lambeth. This society went through three name changes before it became the Junior Institution of Engineers in 1902. This lasted until 1971, since when it has merged repeatedly with other engineering institutes, often changing name in the process. The Institution of Incorporated Engineers was formed in April 1998. Then in 2006 the Institution of Engineering and Technology was formed. That seems to be the current name, for now (2024).

The source of this image led us to a family tree explaining all the IEEIIEE etc. organisations - looks very clear - could have been designed by an engineer.

* Vulcan is the Roman god of fire including the fire of volcanoes, metalworking and the forge.
