Gerald Durrell

Writer and zoologist. Born Gerald Malcolm Durrell in Jamshedpur, Mayurbhanj, India. Brother to author Lawrence Durrell (1912-90).

After his father's death his mother moved the family to Britain in 1928. The Durrells lived in Dulwich for 2 years and in 1929 moved to Upper Norwood. In 1935 they moved to Corfu, where they lived for four years. His time here is covered in his books 'My Family and Other Animals' and others.

Worked at Whipsnade Zoo as a junior keeper, and went on to join wildlife collecting expeditions, bringing back animals for many zoos. In 1959 he founded the Jersey Zoological Park to house his growing collection of animals. He was instrumental in founding many organisations concerned with wildlife preservation. Died in Jersey.
