Geoffrey Gilkes

Our colleague Andrew Behan has kindly researched this man: Serjeant Geffrey Gilkes was born on 5 July 1915 in Wood Green, Haringey, the son of James Herbert Gilkes and Lily Elizabeth Annie Gilkes née Greening. His father was a Chemist Retail Assistant. He was baptised on 15 August 1915 at St Saviours Church, Alexandra Park, Haringey and the family lived at 27 Crescent Road, London N22. According to Electoral Registers they remained at this address until 1923 when they moved to 12 Childebert Road, London, SW17. The 1939 England and Wales Register shows him as single man, still living at 12 Childebert Road and lists his occupation as Horticultural Sundries Mens Clerk.

He joined the Royal Corps of Signals, service number 6022993, and was attached to their 59 Cipher Section when he was killed, aged 28 years, on 16 November 1943. On 10 February 1945 administration of estate was granted to his mother. His effects totalled £284-11s-5d. As he has no known grave he is commemorated on Face 4 of the Athens Memorial, Phaleron War Cemetery, Poseidonos Avenue 8, Alimos, Athens, Greece.
