Pioneer George Jerome Dickson. Born in 1894 in Battersea, the son of Jerome and Sarah Ann Dickson. His father was a Paper Hanger/House Painter. In March 1901 the family was living at 89 Philip Street, Battersea, London. In October 1910 he was appointed as an Assistant Postman in London. By April 1911 the family had moved to Woodbine Cottage, Orkney Street, Battersea and he was a Telegraph Messenger. In January 1913 he was promoted to the grade of Sorter at London’s Western District Office. He enlisted into the 8th Battalion, London Regiment (Post Office Rifles), service number 1427, and transferred firstly to their 3/15th Battalion, service number 6182, and finally to the 2nd Spec. Coy. of the Corps of Royal Engineers, service number 129247. He was Killed in Action on the 6th April 1917, aged 23 years. He is buried in Grave VI.B.16. at the Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont-St. Eloi, Pas de Calais, France. Probate was granted showing his last address as 40 Nine Elms Lane, Battersea. Effects £78 0s.5d. He was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
