Fireman Michael David Hill

Firefighter who died as a result of a fire at Villiers Road, NW2.

Michael David Hill was born on 25 August 1960, his birth being registered in the 3rd quarter of 1960 in the Hackney Registration District, Greater London. His father was David Hill and his mother's maiden name was Jackson.

He married Cindy Stonehouse in March 1991 in the Enfield Registration District, Greater London and they had one child, Ashley Michael Hill (b.1991).

From the Fire Brigades Union website we are informed that he joined the London Fire Brigade in 1986 and that he attended a fire at Access Laundry on Villiers Road, Willesden, Greater London, at approximately 8pm on 10 May 1993. He was part of a crew of four inside the building when the roof collapsed trapping all four firefighters. While the others survived, he tragically died, aged 32 years, from his injuries at the scene.

Probate records show his address to have been 76 Holmbridge Gardens, Enfield, EN3 7EZ and when administration of his estate was granted on 29 July 1993 his effects did not exceed £125,000.

From our Image Source we learn that 'the three owners were convicted of arson and attempted insurance fraud, having deliberately started the fire'.

He is shown as 'Fm Michael David Hill' on the plaque attached to the screen wall of the London Fire Brigade Memorial in Highgate Cemetery, Swain's Lane, London, N6. He is also commemorated on the Firefighters Remembered website and on the National Firefighters Memorial in Sermon Lane, London, EC4.
