Awarded the VC for his heroism on 8 August 1917, age 28, while serving in the Royal Navy. "With his ship under attack from an enemy submarine he continued to man his gun and direct effective fire. For his exceptional gallantry he was selected by the gun crew to receive the award. (Bay of Biscay)". Freemason at: №1428, United Service Lodge.
