Dilys Powell

Journalist. Born Elizabeth Dilys Powell at Lloyd's Bank, Bridgnorth, Shropshire. Although she claimed to have little knowledge of cinema, she was the well-respected film critic for the Sunday Times from 1939 to 1976. She later became film reviewer for Punch magazine until its demise in 1992. She also wrote books about film and travel. Died at St Charles Hospital, Kensington.
