Christopher and Mary Mountjoy

Christopher was a Huguenot tyrer or wig-maker. His apprentice, another Huguenot Stephen Bellot, married the Mountjoy daughter, Mary, in 1604. But things did not go well - in 1612 Bellot sued Mountjoy because the marriage dowry had not been paid.

What makes this interesting is that the Mountjoy's lodger in 1604 had been one William Shakespeare and Mary's mother (also called Mary or Marie) had asked him to assist in arranging the match. So Shakespeare was a witness at the trial. Thus the records of this little family spat have provided posterity with: a specimen of Shakespeare's signature, his address at a particular date, the names of various people that he knew at the time.
