Born Farnborough, Kent.  When he and his wife, Aileen, moved to Battersea they became activists campaigning for better housing, parks and jobs. He was appointed as Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Civil Division (MBE), in the 2005 New Year Honours List for services to the community in Battersea, London.

Our information is from the Guardian obituary.

Our colleague, Andrew Behan, states that he was the elder son of William Barnes and Eileen Mabel Barnes née Hiley (b.1920). His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1944 in the Bromley registration district, Kent (now Greater London). His younger brother was Geoffrey W. Barnes whose birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1946, also in the Bromley registration district.

He married Rose Aileen M McKeegan (b.1946) in the 1st quarter of 1964 in the Sidcup registration district, Kent (now Greater London) and they had two children: Eloise J. Barnes (b.1964) and Glenn J. Barnes (b.1965).

The Companies House website list the five companies with which he was associated and they show that his address had been 69 Condell Road, London, SW8 4HS.

He died, aged 77 years, on 28 November 2021.
