Michael William Lee was born on 1 September 1948 the eldest of the three children of Ronald G. Lee and Dorothy M. Lee née Barker. His two siblings were: Maureen A. Lee (b.1951) and Maurice J. Lee (b.1955).
He was an Acting Leading Fireman in the London Fire Brigade and died, aged 21 years, on 29 September 1969 as a result of injuries he received from the collapse of the roof onto his crew whilst they were engaged in firefighting operations at a derelict World War Two air raid shelter at the back of the former National Car Parks site at Goswell Road, London, EC1. The Fire Brigades Union's Red Plaques website gives more information on this man and the incident that led to his death.
His body was buried on 7 October 1969 in the London Borough of Havering.
It was not until the 1st quarter of 1970 that his death was registered in the London City Registration District.
Probate records confirm that he lived at 27 Lower Mardyke Avenue, Rainham, Greater London and that when administration of his estate was granted on 10 March 1970 his effects totalled £5,345.
He is shown as 'A/Lfm Michael William Lee' on the memorial plaque attached to the Screen Wall at the London Fire Brigade Memorial in Highgate Cemetery, Swain's Lane, London, N6 6PJ. He is also commemorated on the National Firefighters Memorial in Sermon Lane, London, EC4, on the Firefighters Memorial Trust's website and on the Fire Brigades Union's In the Line of Duty website.
