Arthur Edmund John Batt-Rawden was born on 16 July 1928 at 12 Clock Street, Portsmouth, Hampshire, the son of Donald Alfred Batt-Rawden (1902-1981) and Alice Batt-Rawden née Lewis (1907-2007). His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1928 in the Portsmouth Registration District.
He married Joan Steptoe (1930-2019) in the 2nd quarter of 1949 in the Bromley Registration District, Kent (now Greater London) and they had two children: Anthony J. Batt-Rawden (b.1949) and Carole A. Batt-Rawden (b.1953).
Electoral registers in 1952 show him and his wife listed at 84 Clement Road, Brondesbury Park, Willesden, Middlesex (now Greater London).
He was serving as a Fireman in the London Fire Brigade and was attached to Clerkenwell Fire Station when he died, aged 25 years, at a fire in warehouse at Langley Street, Covent Garden, London. His death was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1954 in the Westminster Registration District, London.
Probate records confirm his address as 84 Clement Road, London, NW10 and that when administration of his estate was granted on 1 October 1954 to his widow, his effects totalled £466-0s-0d.
He is shown as 'Fm. Arthur J. Batt Rawden' on the plaque attached to the London Fire Brigade Memorial in Highgate Cemetery, Swain's Lane, London, N6 and as 'ARTHUR 'ED' BATT-RAWDEN' on the Fire Brigade Union's Red Plaque in Langley Street, London WC2. He is also commemorated on the Firefighters Remembered website and on the National Firefighters Memorial in Sermon Lane, London, EC3. Our image of him, his wife and their son was taken in 1953.
