Located at 122 Holborn, at the junction with Leather Lane, and dating from at least 1697. This inn was demolished in 1904 to make room for an extension to the department store Gamages, who occupied the building to the left, west.
This 1886 insurance map shows number 122 being a 4-story "hotel" with an arch over a carriage entrance to an inner courtyard, exactly describing the building in this photo.
This photo comes from Pubs History where it is captioned: "... Taken shortly before demolition, Gamage's already have their sign on the building. Circa 1904."
A 1914 map still shows a "P.H." on the site - we think this demonstrates that maps, like everything else, are not error-proof.
A photo at Warsaw 1948 shows the street with Gamages occupying 5 contiguous buildings, the left-most of which is the left-most bulding shown in this Pubs History photo.
When the building was demolished the bull statue was acquired by William Bull.
