Henri Gaudier-Brzeska

Categories: Art, Sculpture

Countries: France

Artist and sculptor. Born as Henri Gaudier in Saint-Jean-de-Braye near Orléans. In 1910, he moved to London with Sophie Brzeska, a Polish writer with whom he had an intense relationship, adding her surname to his. Although he had no formal training, he became a founder member of the London Group of artists, drawing his inspiration from African tribal art. At the start of WW1 he enlisted with the French army, and was killed in the trenches at Neuville-St.-Vaast.

Derek Sumeray's book 'Discovering London Plaques' includes a reference to a Greater London Council plaque to Gaudier-Brzeska, located at 454 Fulham Road, SW6. There is no sign of it now, and we assume it was lost when the area was redeveloped in the early 2000's.
