Harrow rail crash

Categories: Tragedy

A rare three-train crash which resulted in the death of 112 people and more than 300 injured. Contributory factors: a foggy morning rush hour; one train unusually full due to a previous cancellation; a driver possibly distracted due to running late. One train ran into the back of another; the third arrived on an adjacent track just seconds later and crashed into the wreckage.

NHS History gives: "Among those responding to the disaster were US teams from nearby bases, who were trained in battlefield medicine. They were disciplined, brought plasma and undertook triage - sorting casualties into those needing urgent attention, those who could wait and those who were beyond help. It was a new experience for the rescue services; they were amazed and full of admiration."
