Categories: Literature

Novelist, known professionally as E. M. Forster. He was born at 6 Melcombe Place (demolished) on 1 January 1879 and his birth was registered as Henry Morgan Forster in the 1st quarter of 1879 in the Marylebone registration district, London. He was accidently baptised as Edward Morgan Forster on 15 February 1879 at Holy Trinity Church, Clapham, Surrey (now Greater London). In 1883 moved to a house near Stevenage. In 1887 a great aunt (Marianne Thornton, daughter of Henry Thornton) died and Forster inherited enough to live on. Peripheral member of the Bloomsbury Group. Lived with his mother in Surrey until she died but had a base in London at 26 Brunswick Square (demolished) 1930 -1939. Then he rented 9 Arlington Park Mansions (plaque) until at least 1961.

His Wikipedia page gives much information about this man.

His 6 novels (A Passage to India, Howards End, etc.) were all written by 1924. A homosexual, he had a long relationship with a married policeman, Robert Joseph Buckingham (1892-1975), who, together with his wife, May Buckingham née Hockey (1908-1997), was included in Forster's circle of friends. Forster died at their home, 11 Salisbury Avenue, Coventry, CV3 5DA, aged 91 years, on 7 June 1970. When probate was granted on 6 November 1970 his effects totalled £68,298.

His ashes were later mingled with those of Robert Buckingham and were scattered in the rose garden of Canley Garden Cemetery and Crematorium, Cannon Hill Road, Coventry, CV4 7DF.
