Old Royal Free Square
This stone was laid by His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester GCVO on November 29th 1988.
{Logos: Ni and '33' in a circle}

Laid 60 years to the day after the plaque laid by the Duchess of York.

From Pollard Thomas Edwards: "Project: Old Royal Free Square. Year: 1985–1993. This project transformed a redundant hospital into a major public space and a thriving residential community. The four-acre site was developed by Circle 33 Housing Trust and New Islington & Hackney Housing Association. PTE transformed the front part of the site, which includes both new and Grade II listed buildings, while Levitt Bernstein Associates redeveloped the rear half of the site. The 182 new homes include small flats, family houses and a complete sheltered scheme for the elderly."

N1, Old Royal Free Square

The hospital vacated this site in 1975 and in 1986 the Circle 33 Housing Trust  and the New Islington and Hackney Housing Association jointly bought it. Circle 33 developed the western part, New Islington and Hackney the eastern.

Building work began in 1989 and the site was converted into 178 flats and houses. It was one of the largest housing association projects undertaken.
