Plaque

Orwell - Islington - corrected

Erection date: 27/5/2016

Inscription

George Orwell, 1903 - 1950, novelist & essayist, lived here at 27b, 1944 - 1947.
London Borough of Islington

Site: Orwell - Islington (2 memorials)

N1, Canonbury Square, 27b

May 2016: The Islington Tribute reports that the plaque has been replaced, 27 May, with one giving the correct date of habitation (1944-7 rather than just 1945).

2017: We returned and took new photos but, as is our practice, we've kept the old plaque (marked 'lost') as a historical record.

2020: Peter Duby has kindly written to say that Orwell's address, 27b, was not the basement as is normal but was actually the top floor of number 27. This section of the Square was built as 8 houses and the numbers currently used run, south to north, from 25-32, but we think 25-28 have been converted into lateral apartments.
