Nipper Alley

Inscription

{Between the Borough of Kingston upon Thames crest and the HMV emblem of Nipper the dog:}
Nipper Alley

The naming of the alley after the HMV dog (buried nearby), upset the Kingston Society, who wanted it called Empire Way after the former theatre next door. The Society's Chair was quoted: "I think this is really daft. You know what dogs do in alleys". On our visit the alley was being used to store pallets and large wheelie bins, so, whatever its name, it's not a very attractive place.

Site: Nipper Alley (1 memorial)

KT1, Clarence Street

The alley runs down the side of the former Empire theatre, which opened in 1910. What remains of the theatre is now a public house, but the alley contains the remains of two exotically architraved exits from the theatre.
