Plaque

John Kemp Starley

Inscription

John Kemp Starley (1855 - 1901) widely considered as the inventor of the modern bicycle, lived on Church Hill, Walthamstow.
Waltham Forest Heritage

This plaque was erected between 2015 and 2018. We think this coincided with the planting of a tree (just outside our photo, to the right), which may be related.

Site: John Kemp Starley (1 memorial)

E17, Church Hill

The plaque does not say where on Church Hill Starley lived.  Could it have been in the rather grand house behind the wall bearing the plaque?

From Bike Biz: "Starley lived on Church Hill, Walthamstow, until 1872 when he moved to Coventry to work with his uncle where he helped build Ariel high bicycles."
