Jeremy Bentham - E2

Inscription

Jeremy Bentham House
This building was built in 1972 by Tower Hamlets and was named after Jeremy Bentham (1748 - 1842), who was a philosopher and jurist and is known for his advocacy of utilitarianism.

No explanation for the choice of name is given and we are not aware that Bentham was associated in any way with Tower Hamlets.

2025: Immediately we published this Richard Humm pointed out that Bentham was born near St Botolph's, Bishopsgate - not exactly a local boy but certainly an East Londoner.  We're sure Richard's right; that's the connection.
