Plaque

Independent Order of Mechanics

Inscription

Independent Order of Mechanics
Preston  Unity
London  UK
Corinthians Lodge No. 24
Est 1976
{The text surrounds two logos: an eye; and the masonic square and compasses.}

When placed in a triangle an eye represents the masonic Eye of Providence, but there is no triangle here and anyway, this is not a freemason's lodge. Preston is in Lancashire, where the Independent Order of Mechanics was founded.

Site: Independent Order of Mechanics (1 memorial)

E9, Wick Road, 331

Ancient Hackney discusses this building and the Independent Order of Mechanics but with little enlightenment.

Maps show that the building came into existence between 1871 and 1893, almost certainly as a domestic dwelling. The shape of the plaque suggests that this was not its original location.
