Hendon war memorial - WW1

Erection date: 23/4/1922

Inscription

{On the front, south, face a large grey panel:}
1914 - 1918
Erected by residents of the Central and West wards of Hendon in memory of their glorious dead.
Central Ward
{List of names across 3 columns in alphabetical sequence.}

{On the west face a large grey panel:}
Central Ward continued
{List of names across 3 columns in alphabetical sequence.}
{The total number of names across the 2 Central Ward plaques is 224. See Subjects commemorated for the list.}

{On the east face a large grey panel:}
West Ward
{List of 138 names across 3 columns in alphabetical sequence. See Subjects commemorated for the list.}

The list uses abbreviations for first names extensively: Wm., Richd,, Albt., Chas., Hy., Ivo., etc. Those last standing for Henry and Ivor, we guess. Generally we have left these abbreviations in place.

The last name in the list, Harry Green, is out of sequence and is on a metal plate attached to the plaque - a very late addition to this sad list.

NW4, Watford Way

Another unpleasant site to visit: on a large traffic island in the middle of the A41. It was only after we'd dodged the traffic that we realised the pedestrian underpass allows safe access. We take these risks so you don't have to.

The original WW1 monument was unveiled on St George's Day in 1922. The Listing entry informs: "... originally located some distance to the N near St Joseph’s Convent but was moved to its current location in 1962 as a result of a road-widening scheme." That convent is between St Joseph’s Grove and the A41 so it was probably the creation of this horrible road that caused the monument to be moved to be in the centre of this horrible road.
