Greenwich roundels - Blake

Inscription

Blake

Site: Greenwich roundels (13 memorials)

SE10, King William Walk, Discover Greenwich (Royal Naval College, Pepys Building)

The roundels on the north, river-facing, frontage are occupied by, left to right: Anson, Drake, Cook, Howard, Blake, Benbow, Sandwich, Rodney, Duncan, Collingwood, Howe, Nelson, St Vincent. The reason for this particular sequence is obscure to us; it's certainly not by date of birth or death. Any ideas?

The building, Listed Grade II, was built as the Royal Naval College, Pepys Building, in two phases: 1874-5 by Colonel Clarke RE, then 1882-3 by General Pudsey RE.

The nearest match we can find is "The Abruzzo and Molise Heritage Society of the Washington, D.C. Area" but it's unlikely that they installed the Tosti plaque in London.
