Fountain

Drinking fountain - Du Vergier

Erection date: 22/4/1960

Inscription

This corner of Stoke Newington Common has been laid out to commemorate the services rendered to the Borough of Hackney particularly in the spheres of housing & public health by Mrs Florence H. Du Vergier, JP, Alderman & Councillor of the borough from 1923 until 1953 and Mayor 1943 - 1944.
April 1960

The drinking fountain looks more recent than 1960 and this film of the unveiling confirms our supposition that the plaque was originally attached to an earlier drinking fountain and has been carefully retained and reattached to this new one.

Unveiled by the then mayor Cllr Maurice Blitz. Du Vergier had lived on the adjacent Maury Road.
