Name panel

Battersea Town Hall - Grand Hall entrance

Inscription

{Above the panels:
A sculptural crest with a panel bearing the words:}
Town Hall

{Left hand panel:}
Licensed pursuant to Act of Parliament of the twenty fifth {sic} of King George the Second.

{Right hand panel:}
This is an occasional court house for petty sessions of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the Wandsworth division of the administrative County of London.

Intriguingly, the panels are 'palimpsests' or overwritten texts. We can make out some of the previous words and they seem to be saying basically the same thing as the new lettering (very dull). As we discovered when we researched similar text at Lopping Hall this is not a memorial at all but probably a legal requirement.

We cannot discover when or how frequently the building was used as a court house.

SW11, Town Hall Road, Grand Hall

This structure was the entrance to the Grand Hall, which was constructed as part of Battersea Town Hall, which became a community arts centre and then suffered an extensive fire in 2015.
