Erection date: 2016
{Two trams; one bears the destination 'Docks' and the number 216; the other bears the number 7 and destination 'East Ham Town Hall'. It also advertises 'Bovril' and has the number 2016, which references the erection year.}
Site: East Ham tram depot (1 memorial)
E6, Nelson Street, East Ham Leisure Centre
The depot was renovated for reuse in the 1990s. The blocky building in our photo, bearing the relief, is clearly new and probably dates from that time. The building on the right is the, cleaned-up, west-most part of the original Edwardian tram depot, our photo showing two of the 4 large doors. This 1915 map shows a single tram track in Nelson Road splitting into 4 tracks entering this building, through these 4 doors.
The map shows that this block also contained (clockwise, starting from our photo) Public Baths, a few houses, Fire Station, Library, Town Hall, Technical College, Central Hall, Electrical Works, Tramway Depot, of which all remain with the exception of the public baths and the central hall.
We think all of the buildings in our photo are now used by the East Ham Leisure Centre.
