William John Mulvey

Mayor of Chelsea 1905-6. and Chairman of the Housing Committee in 1909. Veterinary surgeon of 67 Lower Sloane Street.

Our colleague, Andrew Behan, has researched this man: William John Mulvey was born on 24 November 1843 in Soho. The 1871 census shows him a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons boarding with two sisters, Margaret and Mary A Goundry at Galgate Street, Barnard Castle, Durham. On 3 April 1871 he was initiated as a Freemason in the Barnard Lodge No.1230 which met in Barnard Castle, Durham. In 1873 he married Mary Snowball in Newcastle upon Tyne and the 1881 census shows them living at Cockton House, Bishop Auckland, Durham.

The 1891 census has them living at 27 Walpole Street, Chelsea and they had moved to 29 Royal Avenue, Chelsea by the time of the 1901 census. The 1911 census has them living at 30 St Nicholas Road, Upper Tooting. His wife died in 1917. According to probate records he died on 24 May 1924 at Muttusmoor, 30 St Nicholas Road, Upper Tooting and probate was granted to the eldest of his five children, William Snowball Mulvey, who was a veterinary surgeon and to his son-in-law, Michael McCann, a physician. His effects totalled £7,198-11s-9d.
