Fire fighter who died as a result of a fire at King Street, W6.
John Skinner was born on 21 January 1906, the son of Florence Skinner (1879-1942). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1906 in the Marylebone Registration District, London. On 1 February 1906 he was baptised at St Mark's Church, Marylebone and his mother's address was given as Queen Charlotte's Hospital, 189-191 Marylebone Road, Marylebone. No occupation was given for his mother.
As a Sub Officer in the London Fire Brigade he was attending a fire at 26 King Street, Hammersmith, London W6 when he was injured resulting from a fall into the fire after the collapse of the roof. His death was registered as aged 48 years in the 3rd quarter of 1954 in the Hammersmith Registration District, London. Probate records confirm that his address had been 89 Coles Green Road, Cricklewood, London and that he died on 29 July 1954 in the West London Hospital, 202 Hammersmith Road, London, W6. Probate was granted on 23 September 1954 to his cousin, Hilda Ivy Skinner (1916-1979), a spinster and his effects totalled £695-6s-4d.
He is shown as 'Sub O John Skinner' on the Screen Wall of the London Fire Brigade Memorial in Highgate Cemetery, Swain's Lane, London, N6. He is also commemorated on the National Firefighters memorial in Sermon Lane, London, EC4, on the Firefighters Memorial Trust's website and on the Fire Brigades Union's website.
