Awarded the VC for his heroism on 30 November 1917, age 41, while serving in the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). "Most conspicuous bravery, initiative and determination. When brigade HQ was captured he escaped, organised a counter attack and retook the position. Then with a revolver in each hand he attacked a machine gun, killing the crew of eight.
