Queen Victoria's last visit to the City of London

Categories: Royalty

On her visit she was presented with the city sword by the Lord Mayor. We have found a rare photograph of an amused Queen Vicky to illustrate this event. It may not actually have been taken on this visit but, there again, it might have been.

2016: Via Facebook we’ve been informed that this is a picture of Queen Victoria at her 1887 Golden jubilee procession. This is probably correct and normally we would thank the person who provided the information and credit them by name, but since the informant chose to be discourteous we have chosen to be stingy with our appreciation.

2025: Londonist posted a photo of a painting in Ironmongers’ Hall of Queen Elizabeth II making this ceremonial stop at the Temple Bar, pointing out that the monarch is not requesting permission to enter the City, as often related, but rather: "the Lord Mayor offers the monarch protection, symbolised by a pearl-encrusted sword."
