Men of Brixton Independent Church killed in WW1

Group

The names of 85 men are inscribed in the liber vitae, now in the library of the Imperial War Museum: Book LBY 23172, reference 82012.

The phrase 'liber vitae' (Latin for 'book of life') here means a list of names or a roll of honour. It s earlier meaning was a medieval register of the names of people who had entered into a state of spiritual brotherhood (confraternity) with a church or monastery in some way, often by visiting it in the capacity of a pilgrim. Its use for a list of those who died seems strange to the non-religious.
