Mel Calman

Categories: Art

Cartoonist. Born Melville Calman at 64 Linthorpe Road, Stamford Hill. After trying unsuccessfully to work for Punch Magazine, he supplied pocket cartoons for the Daily Express, but left because he saw no real prospects with a newspaper that already employed cartoonists Osbert Lancaster and Giles. He eventually found his niche with The Times, drawing cartoons featuring an angst-ridden, large-nosed, 'little man'. Died of a heart attack in the Empire Cinema, Leicester Square.
