John Thomas

Categories: Sculpture

Born Gloucestershire. A prolific Victorian sculptor. The splendid Speel gives this list of other works in London: pediment of Paddington Station Great Western Hotel; decorative work on the piers of the entrance gates of Buckingham Palace; Pall Mall United Services Club (now Institute of Directors) frieze; figures and decorative vases by the Hyde Park fountains (where we have found the Victoria and Albert medallions).

We've also ready that, with his architect's hat on, Thomas designed the Regents Park Chapel. The only building we can think that might be is the Danish Church of St Katharine and that was designed by Ambrose Poynter in 1826-7.

We here at London Remembers are all far too straight-laced and serious to comment on the slang meaning of this eminent man's name.
