John Compton

Categories: Engineering, Music / songs

Organ builder. Born in Newton Burgoland, Leicestershire. He set up business in Nottingham and moved to London, eventually establishing a factory in North Acton. Many Compton organs were installed in cinemas, and one notable one in the Odeon Cinema Leicester Square, is still used on occasions. Curiously, he went on holiday to Italy in 1940, and unsurprisingly was interned as an enemy alien. He made good use of his time here, in renovating pipe organs.
