Fusilier Stanley James Anstead

Fusilier Stanley James Anstead was born on 15 May 1930, the fifth of the seven children of John Anstead (1892-1968) and Florence Annie Anstead née Hale (1893-1971). His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1930 in the Woowich registration district. His siblings were: Emily Florence Anstead (1920-1987), Charles John Anstead (1921-1985), Ronald George Anstead (1923-1997), Lorna Jean Anstead (1926-2001), Patricia M. Anstead (b.1933) and Betty M. Anstead (b.1937).

Electoral registers from 1929 onwards show the family address to have been 47 Jackson Street, Woolwich, and this is confirmed on the 1939 England and Wales Register in which his father is described as a baker's pastry cook.

He was serving in D Company of the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), service number 22476579, when he was killed in action, aged 22 years, on the night of 24/25th November 1952 whilst participating in Operation Pimlico in the Korean War. He was buried in Section 39, Row 3, Grave 3347 in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery, Tanggok, Pusan (now called Busan), Korea. He is also commemorated on the Ministry of Defence Roll of Honour and on the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, Croxall Road, Alrewas, Lichfield, Staffordshire, DE13 7AR.
