Derwent Wood

Categories: Sculpture

Countries: Germany, Scotland, Switzerland

Sculptor. Born Francis Derwent Wood at Eskin Place, Caslerigg, St John's, Keswick, Cumberland. His family moved to Switzerland and then Germany, where he studied and became proficient in three languages. Returning to England he worked at the Slade School of Fine Art and then the Glasgow School of Art.

As a hospital volunteer in World War 1, he was exposed to the dreadful facial injuries of returning soldiers. This inspired him to use his sculpting skills to open the Masks for Facial Disfigurement Department. This was at the 3rd London General Hospital in what is now the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building, Wandsworth. Died at 14 Henrietta Place, Westminster.
