Dame Frances Gardner

Dame Frances Gardner

Prominent member of the Fitzroy Park Association and past Dean of the Royal Free School of Medicine.

Our colleague Andrew Behan has kindly researched this lady: Born Frances Violet Gardner, a daughter of Sir Ernest Gardner and Lady Amy Gardner, née Inglis on 28 February 1913. Her father was a Conservative Party MP. In 1953 she married George Qvist in 1958 and they lived at Fitzroy Lodge, Fitzroy Park, Highgate. She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1975. Her husband died on 28 July 1981. She died on 10 July 1989 and probate was granted on her estate which totalled £1,634,761. Her will left the majority of her estate to purchase student accommodation at the Royal Free Hospital and a hall of residence at University College London is now named after her.
