The first broadcast was made by Sir Walford Davies, professor of music at Gresham College and was only available in the London area. Nationwide broadcasting started in 1927. The service came into prominence during World War II, by giving news broadcasts which explained the circumstances of the war to children. The service is currently, 2014, based at the BBC headquarters in Wood Lane, London.
