Our colleague, Andrew Behan, has discovered that the year of his death on the memorial plaque attached to the Fairfield Halls, Park Lane, Croydon is incorrectly shown as 1985. Andrew's research reveals that Ashmore died on 28 May 1986.
Albert William Ashmore was born on 21 August 1906 in Croydon, Surrey (now Greater London), the second of the three children of Frederick Albert Ashmore (1864-1957) and Rose Ellen Ashmore née Ball (1867-1944). His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1906 in the Croydon Registration District.
On the 1911 census return form that was completed by his father, he was shown as aged 4 years and living in a 5 roomed property at 41 Queen's Road, West Croydon, with his parents, his two brothers: Charles Frederick George Ashmore (1905-1973) and Ralph Edward Ashmore (1908-1993), together with his maternal grandmother Amy Ball née Turnbull (1847-1928). His father described himself as a wardrobe dealer.
The 1921 census return form was completed by his father on 19 June 1921 and he is shown as aged 14 years, 10 months, an apprentice to a printer, Andress & Co at London Road, Croydon. He was living in a seven rooms at 65 & 67 Windmill Road, Croydon, with his parents and his two brothers: Charles Frederick George Ashmore - a clothier's shop assistant employed by Hewitt & Sons in Church Street, Croydon and Ralph Edward Ashmore who was in whole time education, together with a female boarder. His father described himself as a boot repairer working from his home address.
He married Dorothy Elizabeth Moore Gill (1906-2003) in the 3rd quarter of 1930 in the Croydon Registration District and they had four children: Patricia M. Ashmore (b.1933); Joan E. R. Ashmore (b.1935); Sheila D. Ashmore (b.1937) and Elizabeth A. Ashmore (b.1942).
In the 1939 England and Wales Register his date of birth is confirmed and he is shown as a compositor printer living at 2 Waddon Court Road, Croydon.
Telephone directories from 1953 to 1984 list him at 53 Alton Road, Croydon.
His death was registered as aged 79 years in May 1986 in the Croydon Registration District. Probate records confirm that his address remained as 53 Alton Road, Croydon and that he died on 28 May 1986. When probate was granted on 3 July 1986 his estate was listed as not exceeding £40,000.
He is shown as 'ALBERT ASHMORE' on his memorial plaque.
