George Digby, 2nd Earl of Bristol

Categories: Armed Forces, Politics & Administration

Countries: Spain

George Digby, 2nd Earl of Bristol was an English politician and peer who sat in the House of Commons 1640-41, when he was raised to the House of Lords. He supported the Royalists during the English Civil War, but his ambition and instability of character caused serious problems to himself and both Kings he served.

He started well. Born Madrid, where his father, the first Earl (1580-1653) was ambassador.  When Digby senior was recalled to England in disgrace and sent to the Tower, Digby junior, at only 12 years, presented a petition to the Commons and won his father's freedom.  However about 30 years later in 1653, the father was executed by order of Parliament, and George, an exile in Holland at the court of the future King Charles II, succeeded to the earldom.

Married, in 1635 or 6, Anne Russell (1620 - 1697) daughter of Francis Russell.  In 1674, only a few years before his death, he acquired Beaufort House which is where he died.

Confusingly, not connected with John Hervey 1st Earl of Bristol.
