William Compton, 5th Marquess of Northampton

MP. Either William or his elder brother, Charles, together with their father (the 4th Marquess) donated the original site for what became City University. Brother of Lady Graham. Succeeded to the title in 1897, his brother having predeceased his father.  The 6th Marquess, son of the 5th, was also William.

A London Inheritance have a wonderful 1909 map of London, by W. B. Northrup, 'Octopium Landlordicuss" showing how the great estate owners "suck the lifeblood of the people". Here Lord Northampton is shown as owning 260 acres of Clerkenwell.

President of the Ragged School Union and the Shaftesbury Society.
