At 7.21am on 27 March 1945 a V2 rocket bomb exploded at Hughes Mansions, Vallance Road. Many of the occupants were Jews who had fled from persecution.  134 men, women and children were killed - Andrew Gough's Arcadia contains a list, including the Vollasky couple.
