Audrey and James Callaghan

Categories: Benefactor

James was Labour Prime Minister 1976-9, Audrey his wife, also in politics but particularly interested in child welfare.

Audrey died on 15 March 2005, followed just 11 days later on the 26th by James, in East Sussex.

2023: Mike Coleman prompted us to add an explanation of the connection between this couple and Great Ormond Street Hospital.  Wikipedia has the story: Audrey, a former GOSH chairman (1969–82) spotted a letter to a newspaper which pointed out that the copyright of Peter Pan, which had been assigned by J. M. Barrie to the hospital, was going to expire at the end of that year, 1987 (50 years after Barrie's death, the then-current copyright term). In 1988, Callaghan moved an amendment to the Copyright Designs & Patents Act, then under consideration in the House of Lords, to grant the hospital a right to royalty in perpetuity despite the lapse of copyright, and it was passed by the government.
