Frederic David Mocatta

Tycoon and philantropist. Born London into a Jewish family who came to England from Spain in the 1650s. Married but childless. Worked in the family gold-dealing business until 1874 when he gave his time to philanthropic work especially in the Jewish East End. Author of works of history. Left his library to UCL - see the picture source. Died 9 Connaught Place on, according to the ODNB, his birthday. Other sources have him being born one day earlier.

Bonus fact: the arch-devil worshipper in the 1968 film 'The Devil Rides Out' is named Mocata (based on a novel by Dennis Wheatley).
