Explorer, missionary, writer and medic. Born at Blantyre, just south of Glasgow. Qualified as a doctor in order to go as a medical missionary to China. Got the source of the Nile wrong and failed to make a single lasting convert to Christianity. Died in the village of Chief Chitambo, at Ilala (now in Zambia). His body was brought back and buried at Westminster Abbey. But not all of it; his heart and viscera were buried where he died and are now marked by a stone obelisk.
