Plaque

World's first cash machine - 1992

Erection date: 26/6/1992

Inscription

The world's first cash dispenser was installed here 25 years ago on June 27, 1967, this plaque was given in commemoration by the London borough of Enfield, the worshipful, the Mayor of Enfield, Councillor Doreen Mardon, June 26, 1992.

This quality plaque. the first to be erected on the site, was subsequently stolen in February 2010. We got there too late so must thank Geograph for the photo. Barclays then erected the more standard blue plaque (see 'Also at This Site' to the right.)

EN2, The Town, 20, Barclays Bank

Londonist have a post on this with some photos of the momentous event.

2023: The building was given Grade II listing. There we learn that in 2017, to celebrate the 50 year anniversary a new plaque was installed and one of the ATMs was engoldened.  We need to revisit.

Designed by William Gillbee (or Gilbee) Scott (1857-1930) for the London and Provincial Bank, 1897.
