Herbert Stewart monument

Inscription

{Around the medallion:}
In memoriam Herbert Stewart

{Carved on the edge of the marble ledge between the fountain bowl and the medallion:}
Also of his son Geoffrey Stewart, Coldstream Guards, killed in action in France, December 22nd 1914 aged 36.

The medallion was sculpted in 1886. Chelsea says: "It appears to be based on a lithograph published in 1885 and held in the National Portrait Gallery. Sir Herbert is shown facing east looking directly at his former home."

2023: Michiel Hegener pointed out that this portrait medallion is a copy of that on the Stewart memorial in St Pauls.

SW1, Hans Place

Pont Street was developed in the 1880s. No. 67 (Farm House) was built in 1884 for Sir Herbert Stewart to designs by C. W. Stephens, a red brick structure with tile-hanging to the upper storey and half-timbering in the gables. We also read that the Stewart’s London home was at nearby 40 Cadogan Place.
