On this site stood Althorp Lodge from where Robert Sadler established the Copenhagen Running Grounds which became a major venue for pedestrianism in South London, 1853 - 1864.
Placed by public subscription.

This 1865 map shows Althorp Lodge, but the Copenhagen Running Grounds are not marked.
